Re: fw: Novice?-Best UBUNTU version-Best GNUradio versio

Hi

I'm too using Ubuntu.

  • All recent version from 18.04 to latest 20.10 will give you equivalent experiences.
  • However, if you intend to build from source (compile source), you will have to do it sometime, prefer 20.04 or 20.10 (I think they have a recent cmake version in their PPA which is needed to compile source)

You also plan to use some SDR, so I would suggest you install GNURadio 3.8.  (May be someone could give further information about Adalm and HackRF software availibility under GNURadio 3.8) Be aware that some software needed to use SDR radio under GNURadio are not in PPA so that they should be compiled from source (but this is not so difficult).

  • Do not install GR 3.9 most SDR software have yet been ported to GR 3.9 ( ! May be this information will be outdated in some month)
  • Do not install GR 3.7 (some people do it because they found older tools or tutorial online which have been build for 3.7) It is outdated.

If you are new to Ubuntu/linux, do not hesitate to have 2 install Ubuntu version, a main one with all you running stuff, the other for compiling source trial etc... This later can be reinstalled if you fail in some step, it will be you sandbox where you will learn a lot of things without breaking your main install.

Regards

1. I am a novice at installing gnu radio who has failed several times before.

2. What is the best version of UBUNTU to use? ( I think I know how to install either Ubuntu-20.04 or 20.10)

3. What is the best version of GNU radio (easiest to install from terminal of Ubuntu without compiling)

4. Precisely and exactly (please, with all due respect) what lines do I or should I key into the Ubuntu terminal.

I thank you in advance both for your patience and for your help.  I now want to succeed so that I can follow
the examples in Qasim Chaudhari's book and video course (book is Window Communications from the Ground Up
and videos which are part of the courseA use GNU radio.

I have already in the past (not this year but the two previous years) attended the annual conference but although
I understand the mathematics involved in sdr radio to a certain degree and the concepts involved I have
been consistent in only one thing, my inability to get a working version of gnu radio installed on a machine.

In the future but not part of this request I would like to use various radios that I have  (eg. Adalm pluto, HackOneRF, etc.
but first I just want to get a working version running without any further considerations.

regards

Gerald (Jerry)
